FACILITIES INFORMATION

Land, Runways and Development Opportunities

The airport includes over 1,000 acres with 450 acres lying within the perimeter airport fence. Approximately 141 of those acres have been developed and are utilized in the day to day operations of the airport, so we are just getting started. The property is zoned U-5, which would allow for any of the following uses: office, light industrial, manufacturing, regional wholesale and industrial distribution centers. The airport has two runways: The primary runway, 7/25 is 6337’ in length and 150’ wide and a smaller crosswind runway, runway 1/19, that is 2336’ in length and 100' wide. Our runways can accommodate any aircraft from the smallest Cessna 150 to today’s largest corporate jets

The City of Akron, Summit County and the Greater Akron Chamber are AKR’s partners in putting together economic incentives to attract companies to and foster developments at AKR. Contact information for each of those entities is below.

Flight Training and Degrees

For those desiring to learn to fly or make flying their occupation, AKR offers a fully accredited (ACCET) flight training college and academy called American Winds which is the only licensed flight school in the State of Ohio.  Located at AKR for 15 years American Winds is the only degree-granting institution in the region solely devoted to training professional pilots. The College offers four Associate Degree of Applied Science programs and a bachelor’s degree (in association with Liberty University School of Aeronautics) to prepare students to achieve their goal of becoming a professional pilot and to meet the critical shortage of commercial airline pilots. The aviation degree program is 1 of 326 schools in the U.S.A. and 1 of 11 in the State of Ohio.

American winds offers a PSI testing center authorized to administer all FAA exams and 60 other academic (non-aviation) exams. They have a Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) approved that has attracted students from 17 countries around the world who have an M-1 Visa and soon will be elevated to F-1 Visa status and desire to use flight to further their time in the US and are extensively trained in helping veterans obtain benefits to attend flight school and receive certification. American Winds also participates in the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) program that allows new pilots to be employed with only 1,000 miles of flying, as opposed to the 1,500 typically required by the FAA, thereby expediting trainees into the workforce.
